The alignment and orientation of a single tooth can have a significant impact on its partners in your bite pattern. If one tooth is significantly misaligned and it goes uncorrected the unnatural occlusal relationship can cause the biting surface of one tooth to wear away on the lingual surface of another.

At first, the changes in the tooth enamel might not be overtly noticeable. Yet as time goes on you might notice a change in the surface texture of the tooth. This might also be accompanied by worsening sensitivity when you consume hot, cold, sweet, or acidic things.

Should you notice an issue like this with one of your teeth, you should have it examined by Dr. Eli J. Lawrence and his team as soon as possible. If it’s caught early he might be able to treat the tooth by applying a dental filling made from metallic amalgam or composite resin.

Amalgam is typically dark in color which makes it a poor choice for repairing dental attrition that will appear in your smile. However, composite resin dental fillings can be color matched to mimic natural tooth enamel. This makes them the preferred choice for an overtly visible dental filling.

Once he prepares the surface of the tooth enamel, Dr. Eli J. Lawrence will apply the dental filling material. Then he will cure it with a special ultraviolet light. This will harden the amalgam and ensure a strong bond with the adjacent tooth enamel.

If you live in the Chicago, Illinois, area and you suspect an area of dental attrition has developed on one of your teeth, you should call 312-236-9895 to have it examined treated at Eli Lawrence, DDS’s dental office.
