A good oral hygiene routine is one of the cornerstones of maintaining good oral health. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice a day and floss your teeth once a day to remove residual food particles and plaque before they can harden into tartar and promote tooth decay.

Adding toothpaste to a soft-bristled toothbrush greatly improves the brush’s ability to clean the surfaces of your teeth. Different brands of toothpaste are formulated in different ways. Many of these different properties or additives can specifically address other factors in your mouth.

Your dentist, Dr. Eli J. Lawrence, has a few suggestions to look for when shopping for toothpaste.

First, you should always look for a brand of toothpaste that has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This proves that the toothpaste has been researched and tested by the ADA for safety and effectiveness.

Abrasive toothpaste has mild, abrasive additives to help remove plaque and residual food particles from the faces of your teeth. A brand with added fluoride can also help strengthen tooth enamel to prevent cavities.

Nonabrasive toothpastes and denture polish are called for to clean other dental work and oral appliances, like dentures. It would also be a good idea to keep nonabrasive toothpaste on hand if you need to maintain a custom mouth guard, night guard or snore guard.

Some brands of nonabrasive toothpastes are formulated to help mitigate symptoms associated with chronic dry mouth.

Whitening toothpastes are formulated with a mild concentration of hydrogen peroxide. These toothpastes help reduce minor surface stains between dental cleanings. The concentration of these whitening agents will not be strong enough to improve moderate or deep stains on teeth.
